Sensory Re-Education

Hand TherapyWhen patients suffer from hand injury or condition, sensation may become impaired. The patient experiences numbness, tingling and even hypersensitivity to the cold. Hand sensation can also become impaired following nerve repair.

Following injury or nerve repair, a patient may feel like they’ve lost control of their own hands, or that their hands just aren’t working in sync with the brain anymore.

Midwest Hand Therapy provides sensory re-education hand therapy programs to attempt to retrain the hand’s sensor pathways. A variety of techniques may be used such as massage, vibration, and even touching different textured objects.

Electrical stimulation also may be used as part of a comprehensive approach, as are hot and cold objects to attempt to restore a patient’s feel for temperature. Sensory re-education is extremely important for restoring the sense of touch. Without it, certain things in life may always feel “strange.” In addition to improving quality of life, sensory re-education also gives the patient better control of their hands, so that they can return to accomplishing everyday activities and even work responsibilities.

We work together with patients to restore the hand or hands as best as possible and deliver a customized healing approach for each patient’s unique condition.
